Training your Labradoodle

With Love, Patience and Baby Steps

We recommend that you start training 3 or 4 days after your puppy gets home. The window for learning is wide open from weeks 8 to 12 of your puppies life. While your puppy/dog will be able to learn it's entire life, things learned during before 12 weeks will be learned the easiest and remembered the longest. Just remember, for young puppies, don't over do it. 5 to 10 minutes twice a day is plenty.

Positive Reinforcement Training

At Living the Dream Labradoodles, we are strong proponents of positive reinforcement training. One of the major proponents of Positivity Training is Victoria Stilwell. Here she explains the idea behind positivity training.

Sit

Sit is often the first command that you teach a puppy. When teaching sit, you should should be doing two things. First, you are teaching your puppy to learn how to learn. Second, you are teaching sit.

Come

Come is a command that could save your dog's life someday. It is also one of the hardest for many people to teach. Why would a dog want to leave something fun? It takes love, patience, and persistence.

Mouthing

Puppies learn about the world with their noses and mouths. Your puppy has been playing with his litter mates just the same way, but now it's time for him to learn that it's not OK to put his teeth on skin. Remember, love, patience, and persistence.
